Non-profit Activities

Nesenkeag Farm is a 501(c)(3) charitable and educational nonprofit corporation. Our primary mission is to steward the farmland. We are located on the east side of the Merrimack River in Litchfield, NH. Our soils have the finest classification of loess, the result of a glacial lake 25,000 years ago. There are no rocks in our fields, and our top soil is deep. We steward our soils with cover cropping techniques, along with the fallowing and field rotation that is required by organic certification.

Farm Manager Eero Ruuttila, has developed several marketing and field management techniques that he lectures about during the winter while the farm is dormant. During the season we frequently host tours, including visits from the elementary school kids from Litchfield's Griffin Memorial that lies directly across the street. This educational work is funded from our annual fall fundraiser, where we raffle off gift certificates donated by our client restaurants in Boston and Southern NH.

In addition to our educational work, we are supported by an annual grant from Share Our Strength, a national hunger fighting organization. Their funding, together with our own Plant-A-Meal spring fundraiser, puts fresh produce on the tables of low-income families. During the season the NH Food Bank comes by on most Wednesdays to pick up fresh produce to be distributed through their network of food pantries and agencies. Their traveling food pantry brings our specialty items to new immigrant communities who can take advantage of the availability of fresh produce that are part of their traditional cuisines.

 

 


 

 

Plant-A-Meal Fundraiser

The Plant-A-Meal proceeds enhance our annual grant from Share Our Strength. Taste of the Nation events around the country raise money for their grant giving. New Hampshire's next Taste of the Nation event is in Portsmouth at Strawberry Bank. For more information, click TOTN.

Fall Fundraising Raffle

Prizes consist of gift certificates donated from our client restaurants. 1st prize is valued around $500.Our kick-off for the raffle is in August.
