Nesenkeag Cooperative Farm was founded in 1982
by William McElwain. As the current owner of the farmland, he
turned the farm into a nonprofit entity, providing food to low-come
people. In turn, Nesenkeag provided opportunities for those people
interested in learning farming skills. Over the years, Nesenkeag
has become a leader in innovative organic production, and provides
recreational and educational opportunities for low-income people
and serves as a resource for regional farmers.
